Benign Neck Lump Removal (Lipomas, Neurofibromas, Vascular Lumps)
Benign neck lumps encompass a variety of non-cancerous masses arising from different tissues in the neck. While benign, many of these lumps require surgical excision due to increasing size, symptoms, cosmetic concerns, or diagnostic uncertainty. Dr. Antony Raj James has experience in surgical excision of a wide range of benign neck masses.
Types of Benign Neck Lumps
- Lipomas – Benign fatty tumors that can arise anywhere in the neck and surrounding areas. Excision is performed for enlarging, symptomatic, or cosmetically concerning lipomas. Deep-seated lipomas in the neck require careful surgical dissection to avoid injury to surrounding neurovascular structures.
- Neurofibromas and Schwannomas – Benign tumors arising from nerve sheaths in the neck. Schwannomas arise from the sheath of a peripheral nerve and can often be shelled out (enucleated) while preserving the nerve. Neurofibromas are more intimately associated with the nerve fibers and may require a different surgical approach.
- Vascular Malformations and Haemangiomas – Congenital or acquired vascular lesions in the neck including lymphatic malformations (cystic hygromas), venous malformations, and haemangiomas. Surgical excision or decompression may be required when these cause symptoms or significant cosmetic concerns.
- Paragangliomas (Carotid Body Tumors) – Rare benign tumors arising from paraganglionic tissue near the carotid artery. Surgical excision requires careful dissection from the carotid vessels and is typically performed by an experienced head and neck surgeon.
- Sebaceous Cysts and Dermoid Cysts – Common superficial cysts in the neck and skin requiring excision when infected, enlarging, or cosmetically troublesome.
Surgical Approach
The surgical approach to benign neck lump excision depends on the type, size, and depth of the lesion. Dr. James employs careful dissection techniques to achieve complete excision while preserving important neurovascular structures in the neck, including the carotid arteries, internal jugular vein, vagus nerve, accessory nerve, hypoglossal nerve, and brachial plexus.
