Parotidectomy is the surgical removal of the parotid gland — the largest salivary gland located in front of and below the ear — when it contains a tumor (benign or malignant). Dr. Antony Raj James has specialized training in head and neck oncology and extensive experience in salivary gland surgery, including parotidectomy.
The parotid gland sits on either side of the face, below and in front of the ear. The facial nerve (which controls facial movement) runs through the parotid gland, making surgery in this region technically demanding. Parotidectomy types include:
Surgery is recommended for parotid gland tumors that are symptomatic, growing, suspected to be malignant, or confirmed as malignant on biopsy or cytology. The extent of surgery is guided by the size, location, and nature of the tumor.
Preservation of the facial nerve is a critical priority in parotid surgery. Dr. James performs meticulous facial nerve dissection to identify and protect all branches of the nerve during parotidectomy, minimizing the risk of post-operative facial weakness.
Malignant parotid tumors may spread to regional lymph nodes. Neck dissection is performed when nodal involvement is indicated by clinical or radiological assessment. Dr. James has extensive experience with selective and comprehensive neck dissections at all nodal levels.
Malignant parotid tumors are managed through multidisciplinary tumour-board discussions. Post-operative radiation therapy may be recommended for high-grade or locally advanced parotid malignancies. Dr. James participates in tumour-board discussions to coordinate surgical and adjuvant treatment planning.
